Terrible drivers never use their turn signal.
Average drivers use their turn signal and expect traffic to clear behind them.
Good drivers use their turn signal, check behind them, and merge when traffic clears.
Great drivers use their turn signal even when they know traffic is clear, still check behind them, and then merge.
Setting personal goals works the same way. You need to set them no matter what and can't expect everything and everyone around you to change just because you set them. And you need some luck and other people to achieve them. But setting them consistently, over and over again, for a long period of time, will ensure that you never cause a career accident of your own making while getting to where you ultimately want to go.
