VOIP Solutions Architecture

Author: Hope Ocampo
Voice service is critical to the operation of the business, so no one wants to implement a technology that will compromise call quality or reliability in any way. Thus, the selection of an enterprise VoIP solutions Architecture is a major decision.

On the other hand, the cost savings and value-added functionality available with VoIP makes it a compelling investment. So VoIP buyers must select a VoIP Solutions Architecture that maximizes business benefits while minimizing potential technology ownership headaches.

The design of IP voice solutions should address the following service-level requirements: Open and standards-based VoIP solutions architecture : Enable the IP voice solutions with the flexibility of a comprehensive solution portfolio that interoperates with existing TDM technologies and systems, while protecting existing investment.

The design of IP voice solutions should address the following service-level requirements: Open and standards-based VoIP solutions architecture : Enable the IP voice solutions with the flexibility of a comprehensive solution portfolio that interoperates with existing TDM technologies and systems, while protecting existing investment.

Extensibility : The VoIP solutions Architecture should have the ability to have additional functionality added or to modify existing functionality without impacting the existing functionality.

Scalability : The VoIP solutions architecture will provide the ability to quickly and easily extend the network infrastructure and application to handle increased contact loads or much more agents or new components and applications.

Reusability : Addresses the ease with any functional components or concepts within the VoIP solutions architecture can be reused by other applications.

Maintainability : The VoIP solutions architecture should have the ability to deal with technical issues in existing functionality without impacting other subsystem or components of the VoIP voice environment.

Performance : The VoIP solutions architecture should have good performance across all solutions. For example, good Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms ensure high voice quality through tight control of delay, loss, and jitter.

Manageability : The VoIP solutions Architecture must be easy to be used and managed by most the administrator and technical staff. Also, choose good network management products to provide network administration, operations, troubleshooting, configuring, fault monitoring, and element management.

Additional difficulty in making a purchase decision is the broad range of vendor offering VoIP solutions Architecture on the market.

These offerings can be segmented into two categories: low-end VoIP gateways and high-end router-based solutions.

Low-end gateways VoIP solutions Architecture is tempting because of their low upfront cost. However, they lack many important capabilities that are essential for VoIP to work as required in real-world network environments and to fulfill the requirements of the business. Their poor survivability, lack of intelligent call routing functions and inadequate integration with existing enterprise communications resources limit their usefulness and can lead to problems in provisioning VoIP services as required.

High-end router-based VoIP solutions Architecture products come with a larger price tag and, at first glance, offer more sophisticated VoIP functionality. Unfortunately, they often come with further price premiums in the form of PBX modification and add-on modules for support of H.323 and/or SIP. And, despite their price and apparent robustness, their capabilities may still come up short in many ways - forcing users to change their dialing habits, limiting the efficiency with which available bandwidth can be used, and exhibiting the same lack of survivability as their low-end counterparts.
