Writing Cover Letters

Author: Richard Romando

It may be news to you, but most prospective employers do read cover letters. So lets make it more effective. It is the boring cover letters that are thrown away, while a first-rate cover letter will give a future employer a positive impression of you. When you write a cover letter make sure that it reflects your communication skills, qualifications, abilities and professionalism and adherence to detail. Keep in mind that it is your first introduction to the company you wish to work for. This means that you should think like an advertiser, and that the product is you. Use bold statements and surprising thoughts, and you are sure to catch attention.

A cover letter is like any written manuscript. It has to have a beginning, middle and end. Start off by saying who you are and your reasons for writing. Then speak about your qualifications and abilities; this is the core of the letter. At the end of the letter, give your email id or ask for a meeting. Sign off with words like, Yours Sincerely or With Best Regards. Then check that there are no typos or grammatical errors.

Do your homework to understand what the company is about and how you match the requirements. Assess the qualities and experience you have to make you the best choice. Also understand why you would like to work for the position or the company you apply for. Your letter has to be company-specific; it must not come across as a general letter written for everyone.
